El Tempero Program

Did you see the interview that the program did with us El Tempero de Aragón TV in the Defeder offices?

As you know, Defeder is a family company specialized in the manufacture of ecological 100% fertilizers, founded by two brothers who were originally high school teachers and who today lead one of the leading companies in the sector.

Joaquin Saila It takes us to the laboratory, where they analyze the raw materials and the finished product. For example, measuring the level of nitrate, an essential component of fertilizer, which is one of the most important tasks.

Joaquín assures that: “Our work model is based on the circular economy and eco-viability. The circular economy, because thanks to our raw materials, which come from animal by-products such as manure and vegetable by-products, such as coffee grounds. And eco-viability because we focus on the fact that, for us, what is ecological has to be viable for our clients.”

What is the difference between synthetic and organic fertilizers?

It is absorption. Synthetics are faster in absorption and organic ones slower. What we are doing with the quality and R&D&I department is introducing bacteria, microelements and water retainers. What bacteria do is advance absorption and compare ourselves to synthetics.

One of your main objectives is to end the punished land of Aragon. How is the Aragonese countryside in that sense?

We are not bad, but we must make a good app of those organic materials.

In 2023, according to European regulations, the 25% of arable land in Europe must be ecological. Do you think we are going to get there?

It is an important challenge because we have a shortage of raw materials. The idea, more than organic agriculture, would be an agriculture of residue 0.

Organic fertilizers with coffee grounds

They have been participating in the project for 1 and a half years. Fertcafe together with the Huesca company eboka. Today they receive one of their shipments, coffee grounds collected from vending machines that will be given a second life and converted into ecological fertilizer. “As we are manufacturers of organic products, we have defined the raw materials that can be useful for organic farming, especially those that come from animal proteins and some vegetable compost; since, in the end, we end up making these different formulas to have the fertilizers that we have registered”Saila says.

And why include coffee?

It has a protective nematicidal effect, which will reduce the base of pesticides and pesticides that are later used in the field. In addition, caffeine allows a structuring effect on the soil.

What is the pelleting process like?

We control the product grain size and humidity. It is important that the final product is compact, but not very hard and does not fall apart when it comes into contact with moisture.

What do farmers think about organic fertilizers?

Packaged in large bags of 1,500 kilos or in bags of 25 kilos, they are increasingly being incorporated by more farmers, such as Miguel which has incorporated organic products in all its farms. "All my life I have used chemicals and 3 years ago, I made the change and currently, the 70% of the fertilizer on my farm is with organic matter."

What changes have you noticed?

Productivity is the same, but we improve the soil and quality from the earth. And you give a better life to the earth. On this farm a powder fertilizer will be used, granules/pellets are also used on fruit trees, but extensively, I usually use powders. I work both, as appropriate.

Does it help when it comes to farming?

Being organic matter gives it another earth texture and the remains of the previous harvest decompose better than if we used chemicals.

A change that the crops and the soil appreciate and in which the Saila brothers and their team have participated for more than a decade. For them, the most important thing is to seek, through sustainable innovation, to enhance the regenerative agriculture, through technology POWERDEF. And, in addition, they export the 60% of their production to 22 countries on 3 continents.
